Great Wall of China: Which Section Should You Visit?

SkyFlyZone Team6 min read

Mutianyu, Jinshanling, Badaling, and Simatai compared — crowds, restoration, hiking difficulty, and access from Beijing.

The Great Wall spans thousands of kilometres — most visitors see one section on a day trip from Beijing. Your choice depends on whether you prioritise accessibility, photography, hiking, or avoiding tour-bus crowds.

Mutianyu

Our default recommendation. Well restored, cable car and toboggan options, manageable crowds on weekdays. Suitable for families and first-time visitors. About 90 minutes from central Beijing.

Jinshanling

Partially restored and wild sections side by side — the choice for hikers and photographers willing to drive further (roughly 2.5 hours). Fewer facilities but dramatic ridge walking.

Badaling

Closest to Beijing and most visited — often uncomfortably crowded. Wide restored steps but limited atmosphere. We generally steer clients elsewhere unless time is extremely tight.

Simatai

Steep and scenic near Gubei Water Town. Night visits possible on illuminated sections. Physically demanding; rewarding for fit travellers.
