First-Time China: What to Know Before You Go

China rewards preparation. Infrastructure is excellent, but language barriers, payment systems, and timed-entry attractions mean that winging it rarely works as well as in other Asian destinations.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Most nationalities require a tourist visa (L visa) obtained before travel through a Chinese embassy or visa centre. Hong Kong and Macau operate separate immigration systems — a China visa does not cover either. Some cities offer 144-hour transit visa-free stays for eligible passport holders; rules change periodically, so verify against your nationality before booking.

Money and Mobile Payments

Cash is increasingly uncommon in tier-one cities. WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate — linking a foreign card is possible but can be finicky on arrival. Carry some yuan for taxis and small vendors, and notify your bank of travel dates.

High-Speed Rail Tips

G-series trains between Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, and Chengdu are faster and more reliable than domestic flights once airport transfer time is counted. Book second class for comfort at lower cost; passport required at ticket gates.

Cultural Notes

Queueing has improved in major cities but remains fluid at ticket counters. Tipping is not expected. At temples, dress modestly and avoid pointing feet toward altars. Photography restrictions apply at some sites — follow posted rules rather than assuming.
