Overview

Dubai has evolved from a pearl-diving port into a global hub for aviation, commerce, and tourism. Beyond the Burj Khalifa and Palm Jumeirah, the emirate offers desert safaris, traditional souks, and a growing arts district. Abu Dhabi adds the Louvre, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and Ferrari World within a 90-minute drive. Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah provide cultural depth and mountain scenery respectively. The UAE suits short luxury breaks, family holidays, and multi-emirate itineraries equally well.

Culture

The UAE is tolerant and cosmopolitan yet rooted in Islamic tradition. Dress modestly in malls, mosques, and government buildings — shoulders and knees covered. Public intoxication and disorderly behaviour carry serious penalties. Photography of people, especially women, requires permission. Friday is the primary day of worship.

Food

Emirati cuisine features machboos (spiced rice with meat), luqaimat (sweet dumplings), and Arabic mezze. Dubai's dining scene spans Michelin-starred restaurants, Lebanese grills, South Asian curry houses, and food halls. Alcohol is served in licensed hotel venues. During Ramadan, avoid eating or drinking in public during daylight in respect of fasting colleagues and residents.

Travel Tips

Metro and taxis are efficient; rental cars suit multi-emirate trips. Friday–Saturday is the weekend — book brunches and popular attractions ahead. Summer heat requires sunscreen and hydration. Desert safaris include dune bashing — inform operators of back or neck issues. Tap water is desalinated and safe, though many prefer bottled.
